· Stainless steel is a corrosionresistant alloy of different metal types that, when mixed, become stronger and more durable. Engineers have developed different varieties of the alloy by adding and deducting various elements, thereby creating different types of stainless steel, each having their own uses and characteristics.
Some of the most highly corrosion resistant stainless steels are strongly magnetic. examples are the duplex and super duplex grades and highly alloyed ferritic grades such as 294C. Cold drawn 304 also has high tensile strength, but this is not due to the magnetic response – both the magnetic response and the high strength are due to the cold work.
· Ferritic Stainless Steels. These are plain chromium ( to 18%) grades such as Grade 430 and 409. Their moderate corrosion resistance and poor fabriion properties are improved in the higher alloyed grades such as Grades 434 and 444 and in the proprietary grade 3CR12.
